Bawden trained at the RCA, London, under Paul Nash. He travelled as a war artist during the Second World War. His work ‘combined a gentle sense of humour and a strong sense of pattern’. He produced many book illustrations, along with posters, advertisements and textiles. He worked for many years for the Curwen Press, Shell, Fortnum and Mason, National Westminster Bank, and LT over seven decades. He was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1946, elected Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 1949, and RA in 1956.
