Or said it to someone else?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🙋🏻🙋🏻🙋🏻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is something I heard many times after having each of my babies, and also as I was recovering from disordered eating that left me carrying a bit more weight than my body naturally wanted to be carrying.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Of course it felt great to hear! I soaked it right up.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, if you think about it, what message was I really internalizing?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'll tell you: deep down, I had this belief that if my weight DID shift again (which it inevitably did/does, because I had more babies, experienced a change in seasons or life circumstances, metabolism shifts, normal life, etc) I would not be as acceptable or valued in the eyes of others- and thus, myself. And this is just, so, so unacceptable.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Additionally, when someone gains or loses weight, we never REALLY know the reason behind it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maybe they've lost weight from an illness or an eating disorder that they are suffering with privately.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maybe they HAVE been attempting to lose weight and are excited about it. But, as we know, the majority of people who diet and lose weight will likely gain most of it back again. And how will they feel if/when that happens?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Or maybe someone is gaining weight as an important part of their eating disorder recovery. You just never know.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But no matter what you say, no matter how much of a compliment you are intending to give, the reality is that focusing on body size and body changes only serves to promote further body image suffering in the majority of cases.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm deeply sorry if I've ever played a part in this for anyone reading this post.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I love this article. And would you believe it if I told you every woman in this photo had it?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are many names for this type of cancer - secondary / stage IV / metastatic / terminal (only if you're trying to win an argument though!) They all mean the same thing........⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A secondary cancer is when a cancer spreads, metatasizes, from the original location to somewhere else in the body. Once it has spread it is no longer "curable" and, whilst it might become dormant in a person's body (NEAD - No evidence of active disease) it will always be there and someone with MBC will be in treatment for it for the rest of their life!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In my case, my cancer went from my breast to my bones, But breast cancer tends to like spreading to the bones, the lungs, liver and the brain. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you've had a primary cancer and you are concerned about a spread in your cancer, please look up ABCDiagnosis and check out the infographics Jo has created. It’s now 1 in 7. . According to @breast_cancer_care and @breastcancernow the change to 1 in 7 is down to new data and future projections. The increase reflects future projections for life expectancy, the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer and mortality. With improved healthcare and longer life expectancies, the number of breast cancer patients is expected to rise as more people are living longer. . Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with one woman diagnosed every 10 minutes. Around 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK In England, every year around 46,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. In Scotland, every year around 4,700 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. In Wales, every year around 2,900 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. In Northern Ireland, every year around 1,400 people are diagnosed with breast cancer. A further 7,000 people are diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), an early form of breast cancer, in the UK every year. One in seven women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month nearly 5,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer. . I don’t know about you, but I find this terrifying.
