[MEDIA] Discussing the ‘Right to be Forgotten’ with @UCBNewsTeam

Yesterday, I spoke to UCB Radio about the new data legislation:

People will get a new right to force social media companies and online traders to delete their personal data under laws to be brought forward by the government this summer. Matt Hancock, the minister for digital, said it would amount to a “right to be forgotten” by companies, which will no longer be able to get limitless use of people’s data simply through default “tick boxes” online. [MEDIA] Discussing the responsibility of social media companies re safer internet with @UCBMedia

Back in February, the government set forward plans for a new Internet Safety Strategy, and there was a meeting on Wednesday in which Karen Bradey MP called for software companies to be more responsible:

“Social media companies have a responsibility to protect people who use their technology, and we want to hear what more can be done to keep children and young people safe from online threats.

“This Government is determined to make Britain the safest country in the world for young people to be online, and to make sure that everyone – including the public sector, technology firms, parents and children themselves – is playing their part.”

UCB asked me for a response, and despite my brain being in holiday mode, think I was still coherent (I’m Senior Lecturer at MMU, by the way):
